CHARLES MARTIN

 

A celebtration of a life well lived will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017, 11:00 AM, Montezuma Church of Christ, Hwy 49 South, Montezuma, GA.  Public viewing at Bentley-Montford Mortuary 9:00AM - 9:00PM on Thursday, March 9th.

 

Charles grew up in Long Island City, Queens, NY. He attended Brooklyn Automotive High School and graduated in 1959. It was while living in Long Island City; Charles met his wife, Catherine Coleman. Charles and Catherine were married on October 1st, 1960. That marriage lasted for 56 years. From this union, they were blessed with three children; Audrey Tankard (of Long Island, NY), Colette Taylor (of Kennesaw GA), and Elijah Martin (of Austell, GA).

 

In 1980, at the Huntington Church of Christ, Charles was baptized. While a member at Huntington Church of Christ, Charles served as a Deacon for a number of years.

 

Charles worked for 33 years with the State of New York as a State Trooper. In 1993, Charles retired with the State of New York as a Detective with Troop L.

 

After Retirement, Charles and his family moved to Chesterfield, VA for eight years.

 

In Chesterfield, Charles taught Sunday School, and volunteered with several different ministries.

 

Eventually Charles and his family relocated to Reynolds Georgia where he became and Elder at the Montezuma Church of Christ. Charles mentored young black men and trained them in worship service. Charles loved fishing, holding conversations with his brothers and cooking ox tails.

 

Charles leaves to mourn: his beloved wife Catherine Martin; his three children Audrey Tankard, Collete Taylor, and Elijah Martin; grandchildren: Derrick Tankard, Erika Tankard, Latoya Taylor, Simone Taylor, Jame A. Taylor Jr., and Elijah E. Martin Jr.; and 11 great grandchildren. Charles also leaves to mourn his three brothers Melvin, Terence, Ray, sisters Celene, Pearl Gibson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

    My dearest Brother Martin. I am so thankful God planted you in Virginia at which time I had an opportunity to meet you and to have serve with you at the Arlington Road Church of Christ in Hopewell, Virginia. I am going to miss you more that I missed you when you moved away. Love Sister Walker

    I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Brother Martin. On the Sunday that he passed away, Brother Crusoe and I was talking about him, not even realizing that he was no longer with us. Please know that I loved my brother in Christ. You all made me feel special.
