Evelyn Jefferson was born on June 11, 1939 to the parents of Will and Ethel Jefferson.
Evelyn learned the values of having good work ethics from growing up on the Fountain Place in Taylor County. The lessons she learned as a young girl working in the cotton and peach fields and from her grandmother, Mollie Newson, prepared her for life in the big city.
Evelyn moved to Chicago, Illinois after school and started a new journey in the “Windy City”. During her years in Chicago, she married Hubert Bankston. Bankston as he was affectionately called went home to be with the Lord after a tragic car accident.
In 1978, Evelyn returned home to Taylor County, Georgia and built her a home on Macon Street in Reynolds, Georgia. After returning home, she became employed with Spilene of Reynolds, Inc. which specialized in manufacturing leather handbags for women. Evelyn later became employed with Oxford T-Shirt Company in Reynolds.
On July 31, 1980 she married United States Army Soldier, Joe Hairston. She was able to travel the world with her husband. After retirement, they built a home in 2002 on MLK Drive in Reynolds. In later years, she became the First Lady of the Union Baptist Church in Montezuma, Georgia and later at the New Home Baptist Church in Garden Valley, due to Joe becoming the Pastor of both churches.
Evelyn enjoyed shopping, cooking, and gardening and especially entertaining family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Anna Mae Carson and Betty Law; three brothers, Walter”Bubba” Jefferson, Larry Jefferson and Terry Jefferson; and most recently, her nephew, Nathan Law.
